Director of Governmental Affairs

This position is responsible for conducting the Maine Credit Union League’s governmental affairs priorities. The incumbent will coordinate with the Vice President of Advocacy & Outreach to conduct and advance the League’s legislative, political, and regulatory agenda. The incumbent will work with the Governmental Affairs Team to build and maintain professional relationships with state and federal elected officials and regulators, and outside organizations with common advocacy interests. This position will be public facing and will often speak on behalf of the League and Maine’s credit unions on policy matters, public hearings, and other advocacy events. This position will take part in Maine Credit Union League committees and support the Maine Credit Union League’s political involvement activities, including but not limited to assisting the Vice President of Advocacy & Outreach in leading and managing the League’s Credit Union Legislative Action Committee.

Essential Functions:

  • Support the Maine Credit Union League’s and Synergent’s credit union advocacy agenda; research and be informed on legislative issues facing credit unions, including relevant regulatory agencies, current and upcoming compliance topics.
  • Support the Maine Credit Union League’s and Synergent’s legislative advocacy outreach, including drafting and presenting internal and external communications, updating legislative resources, and providing background information to the League, Synergent, and member credit unions on important governmental affairs items.
  • Assist the activities of the Vice President of Advocacy & Outreach and the Maine Credit Union League’s and Synergent’s retained lobbyists through researching and assisting in drafting testimony for relevant credit union and Synergent legislation; support the Maine Credit Union League’s digital advocacy efforts and legislative communications; work with the Vice President of Advocacy & Outreach to research and draft regulatory comment letters and other related advocacy support resources.
  • Work collaboratively to maintain relationships with policy makers, both in Augusta and in Washington, D.C. This will require time spent in Augusta and assisting in regular communications with staffers for Maine’s congressional delegation. While also assisting in communicating important advocacy matters to the League’s membership.
  • Assist in maintaining, identifying, and developing relationships of outside organizations, trade associations, and other interest groups, etc. that could benefit from collaborating with credit unions to achieve similar goals and aspirations to advance the lives of Mainers.
  • Support the Maine Credit Union League’s Governmental Affairs and Compliance Committees, including supporting the working groups of each committee and drafting materials for Committees when needed.
  • Collaborate with the Vice President of Advocacy & Outreach with political fundraising compliance (CULAC), develop political involvement guidelines and fundraising goals, while identifying ways to fulfill CULAC goals
