Employee Spotlight: Derek Veilleux, Team Lead – eServices

Synergent’s mission is to ‘help credit unions succeed and improve the financial lives of their members.’ In our monthly Employee Spotlight series, we feature one of our dedicated staff members to help you get to know the people who are working as an extension of your credit union team.

Derek Veilleux, Team Lead – eServices, has long been an integral part of the Synergent family. In September, he celebrates 17 years with the company!

Initially, Veilleux joined Synergent as an operator in the computer room, working the 4:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. shift, where he spent roughly four years. In 2009, he transitioned into the Synergent eServices department as an eServices Analyst and moved up the ranks in eServices over the years until he became Team Lead of the department in 2021.

“I had a desire to continue my professional growth by getting into a leadership role, so when the opening for the Team Leader role was posted in 2017, I applied,” said Veilleux. “While I wasn’t selected for the position, I did take on the back-up Team Lead position and continued to strengthen my role in eServices so I would be ready for the next opportunity. When the position opened again in 2021, I jumped at the chance and was selected.”

The eServices department is responsible for multiple online banking products and services that credit unions rely on to help their members every day. The team in eServices helps manage Synergy (document archive), iTalk (telephone banking), Alogent (online banking), credit retrieval, and SymXchange/Symconnect. The ongoing work in the eServices department allows Synergent’s credit unions to provide optimal offerings to continuously meet varying member needs.

“The great thing about working in my role is you never know what direction your day may take,” Veilleux said.

Day-to-day, Veilleux stays on top of his calendar, emails, and list of tasks that need completing, always paying close attention to anything that needs immediate action. As Team Lead, he often coordinates projects with his team to ensure all work and requests receive a quick turnaround.

“My favorite part of my job is working alongside my co-workers,” explained Veilleux. “I enjoy the daily interactions with my teammates and the willingness to help each other come up with solutions to best serve the credit unions.”

Since starting with Synergent, Veilleux has gained the understanding that technology is always changing. He explains that it is important to always be willing to learn new things and be well-rounded in this industry. This mindset served him well during the configuration and setup of the Synergy Archival System.

“This was a large project that took several years to complete,” described Veilleux. “I was involved in all aspects of the project, from the initial configuration of the software through the migration of all credit unions from our previous archival system. This is a system that credit unions rely on heavily every day.”

Committed to Community Improvement and Connection

Over the years, Veilleux has appreciated aspects of the Synergent community beyond the work in front of him. He fondly recalls decorating the company Christmas tree along with his wife, and feels Synergent has always supported and valued him. Outside of work, Veilleux enjoys the time he spends as head coach for the boy’s indoor and outdoor track and field teams at Scarborough High School, which he has been doing for 20 years.

“There is nothing better than helping a kid realize their potential and see them achieve things they never thought were possible when they began,” Veilleux said.

His favorite hobby is collecting both sport and non-sport trading cards. He also loves to visit his favorite island of Kauai, Hawaii.
